Creating CRM Data Segments

What are CRM segments?

To enhance campaign targeting, Keynes Digital has the ability to layer on segments from your existing customer lists. These segments can be used in a variety of ways, such as building lookalike audiences, blocking past purchasers from targeting, or retargeting prospects who have not yet purchased.

CRM data segments are created by uploading a .CSV file into our system, which must be under 500 MBs. Only one email address (regular or hashed) should be entered per line, and a minimum of 5,000 email addresses is required. Below is an example of a .CSV file template.

Uploading Hashed Emails

When Hashed Email is the record type of your .CSV file, you must normalize and hash the emails prior to upload.

Normalizing Emails

Step 1 – For email addresses ending in gmail.com:

  • Remove leading and trailing spaces.
  • Convert all ASCII characters to lowercase.
  • Remove . (ASCII code 46) from the username of the email address.
    • jane.doe@gmail.com normalizes to janedoe@gmail.com.
  • Remove + (ASCII code 43) and all subsequent characters from the username of the email address.
    • janedoe+home@gmail.com normalizes to janedoe@gmail.com.

Step 2 – For all other email addresses:

  • Remove leading and trailing spaces.
  • Convert all ASCII characters to lowercase.
Hashing Emails

After an email address has been normalized, it must be hashed using base64-encoded SHA256. As an example:

  • Normalized Email: user@example.com
  • Email After Hashing: tMmiiTI7IaAcPpQPFQ65uMVCWH8av9jw4cwf/F5HVRQ=
